How to incorporate machine utility and decorative stitches to create works of art. This is a great way to get the creative MOJO working when you are in a rut. |
I started with a good sized piece of stabilized black fabric. My goal was to make three fabric postcards from my thread play exercise.
Next I selected different decorative and crafting stitches (if using SE look at menu D Heirloom sewing stitches, E Quilting stitches, F Appliqué Stitches, G, L-N Decorative Sewing Stitches) Each new stitch I also used a new thread. This is a great exercise to try out the stitches on your machine and to try out new threads that you might not normally use.
I kept adding new stitches and threads. Each one was sewn in a different direction to add movement to my piece. I used variegated thread, metallic thread, cotton thread, shiny polyester thread even glow in the dark thread. Some worked really well and others did not. Depending on the thread, I had to change the needle and tension to make it work. Some of the decorative detailed stitches did not work well with the metallic thread. I can see that those will take some practice.
After I had lots of colors and stitches I cut the fabric into three 4" X 6" postcards. Below is another type of thread play. I made a grid with several different threads and then free motioned circles in the center kinda like a checker board.
