| Allison Ray Sewing Room "Where Creative Mess is always better than Idle Neatness!" Welcome to my sewing room- or sewing studio as my family likes to call it. When my father first built it for me a few years ago, we shared step by step construction photos. | March 1, 2007 - I change this page often with my thoughts of the day.... Its funny really, how often my sewing room changes. It changes with my mood and ofter with what ever project or pattern I am working on. For a while a had a few quilts hanging up on the walls, but now it's nothing but business...Down and dirty Sewing. My husband and I just returned from "Lost Wages" or should I say Las Vegas. He played poker and craps...I read lots of sewing, quilting, and fiber arts books and magazines. One of which totally chaged the way that I am going to think about my sewing from now on, the article "spoke" to me. It was in Quilter's Home Magazine (This is a must read every month magazine) Volume 2. Issue 1 March/April The article is on page 76. "Do your Quilts have a style?" I have been doing crafts and sewing for years and own a small company that makes custom baby items- www.ShoppingCartCoverStore.com. Over the last year or so I have taken up quilting. It started from a need to be more social, since, both my husband and I work from home in online businesses - other than going to the fabric stores- there were not a whole lot of social avenues. I also wanted to find a way to express myself more creatively- not that I don't love sewing all the baby items- they are all made from the same pattern just with different fabrics. Long story short I found a local quilt shop a few town over in Garland TX called Suzy's. I have taken several classes, joined a few clubs and go to the once a month "lock in". I can't imagine meeting a nicer group of women tthan the gal's at Suzy's Quilt Shop! I love the idea of making quilts, buying fabrics for quilts, cutting the quilts and even ironing the quilts. What I am not crazy about is how EXACT you must follow the techniques provided in the quilt patterns. Okay back to my point about the article- It was about a quilter who loved to sew/quilt but was a "Presicion Impaired Quilter" The techniques she liked best are what I enjoy most too- embellishments, fusible machine applique, fun/easy crooked shaped blocks. She recognized what piecing and techniques she enjoyed and use those as a foundation and develops from there. That's exacly what I am going to do...fiber arts is supposed to be a fun creative outlet not a whipping! Not that I had New Year's resolutions, or maybe I did and they are on a list somewhere in a stack of lists of ideas, hopes and dreams. These are my new 3 official 2007 quilt resolutions: 1. Sew only with fabrics that I love- High quality cotton or organic cotton fabric that feel as soft and sew like a dream. And if I can't find a fabric that I love in the perfect color- I'll dye my own- thanks to the inspiration of Trish Stuart. 2. If I start a quilt or project and do not want to finish it...I'm not! Not everything I start is worth finishing, some project can serve examples or exercises and not "finished" quilts. 3. I can start with a pattern or design in mind and then throw caution to the wind and have fun creating it MY way. June 2007 Photos of My Sewing Studio I am sure it will change again soon so I'll take more photo's in a few months. |
Embroidery and Notions Station in my Sewing Room- I got those awesome metal rolling bins from the container store. They are just fantastic for rolling around heavy bolts of fabric.
Incoming Orders, Orders to Be Shipped, Ironing and Pressing, and New Design Ideas Station in my Sewing Room. The base of this station is a cutting table from Joann Fabrics. Under the table I have plastic storage bins and shelf to hold bolts of fabric. It is really much more organized than it looks.
Pressing and Ironing Station with Mini-fridge under the station decorated by my twins Mary-Margaret and Madeline.
Dad made the wall to cut back for added storage. I have two more rolling bins for bolts of fabric- I only keep the ones in my office I am currently using- all the other bolts are stored outside of the sewing room inside floor to ceiling enclosed shelves. On top of the bookshelf I keep little plastic storage bins with fabrics for specific projects to I can quickly access them.
