Inchies and PSI's (Plus Size Inchies/ FAT Inchies)
Inchies and PSI's (Plus Size Inchies) are all the rage- Fiber Artists are creating one inch at a time ...literally. First there were fabric postcards, then ATC (Artist Trading Cards) and now INCHIES. So what are inchies you ask? They are little embellished fabric or fiber squares. Inchies are 1" X 1" and PSI's are 1 1/2" X 1 1/2". The inchies are usually made from either little scraps of fabric or paper squares, but the sky's the limit on what type of medium you use. Quilting Arts Magazine, August/September 2007, Issue 28, Page 80-82 has a wonderful article written by Normajean Brevik. The article illustrates the possible uses for inchies, materials to make inchies, directions for how to make inchies, instructions for how to create sheet of inches. www.quiltingarts.com Normajean Brevik has an artist trading group that makes and trades/exchanges inchies and plus size inchies. For information to join an inchie swap take a visit at Normajean's Yahoo Group, Fiber Art Traders http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FiberArtTraders/ I am working on a PSI exchange called "Seasons". When my psi's are finished, I"ll be sure to post a photo. In the seasons challenge the artists participating are making 6 PSI's for each season, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. The photo's of the PSI's posted in the yahoo group are amazing. They were made by some super creative folks. I love the idea of the PSI's and Inchies because they are so portable. I can pack up a little case and take them with me to work on. So far I have made my inchies with the sandwich method...fabric, batting, fabric then embellish, embellish, embellish. I have also made a few using fast 2 fuse and was real happy with how they came out. If you do not have fast 2 fuse or batting, you might also try craft pellon, or Timex to make the base. I took some to show at my local quilt guild meeting and the most common question about how to make inchies was what do you use to embellish or decorate the inchie? Anything that you can sew or glue down....One of the things I love best about making the inchies is that there is no right or wrong way to make them (other than making an inchie...5" X 5"...LOL)You can decorate inchies and psi's with yarn, fabric paint, sequins, buttons, beads, stickers, angelina, paper, yo yo's, charms, leftover fibers, decorative thread, pressed flowers anything small that makes you happy.

Fat Inchie Art - What to make with all your FAT Inchies? Below are the four pieces of art I submitted to Quilting Arts Magazine for the Houston Quilt Show. They are art pieces that incorporated fat inchies. Everyone, please keep your fingers crossed for me.
Journal Cover with Fat Inchies- tied on to tassle. I use the different pieces of the tassle with inchie to mark pages in the journal.
Mixed Media Necklace and Pin made with Fat Inchies and lots of other goodies.
Fat Inchie Pin This is one of my favorite pieces. The pin was made with a piece of wire that I wrapped around a pen to make a coil. Then I used three beaded fat inchies with angelina fibers and added little charms to hang off the bottom of each. There is also a pillow charm wrapped with copper wire and beads, two little bead bottles and a charm made with a piece of beach glass that is wrapped with copper wire and beads.
Fat Inchie Name Tag When I teach classes and go to guild events I like to wear my crazy name tag. It was so easy to make. I started with my name that was monogrammed with a designer SE, then crazy quilted around it with purple, orange/red batik fabrics, then I added some angelina fibers, decorative cording that I made from extra threads/yarns and finished it off with some embellished fat inchies.
