How to prepare fabric for quilting and sewing projects.

Prior to most sewing and quilting projects its important to get your fabric ready.  If you only cut and sew your project, you may be very disappointed with the end result.

How do you prepare fabric for quilting and sewing projects?

Wash each color fabric separately according to manufactures instructions.  I always separate the dark fabric and rinse them in my kitchen sink until they rinse clear.  Sometimes with the darker fabrics they have a tendency to have excess dye that can stain your other fabrics.  Dry the fabric until damp- not completely dry.

Iron each piece of fabric while it is still damp.  The fabric seems to press better when damp.  You will be able to get more crisply ironed results.  Some quilters like to use starch when ironing as they feel it makes the cutting easier later; however most of the quilting and sewing I do is for children so I don’t usually starch as it can irritate sensitive skin.

Cut off the selvedges so you do not accidentally cut them into your project.  You never want to use selvedges in your projects as the selvedge shrinks considerably more than the other fabric.  It can cause terrible puckering in your quilt once it has been assembled and washed.
