| How to applique shapes onto quilts and sewing projects. Applique can be a fun and easy way to embellish quilts or other sewing projects. I think the cutest clothes I have made for the twins have been a pair of denim overalls that had big daisy appliques on the knees. It is so easy to do and it really makes your quilt or project stand out. You can start an applique collection from any shapes you see. Some of the best appliques have come from the twins coloring books. |

| How do you appliqué shapes onto quilts or sewing projects?
The fastest technique to appliqué is to use fusible webbing. When you use the fusible webbing method, you can either hand embroider the shape on or machine quilt it. Step one: Make sure that you reverse the pattern/shape or your pattern will be backwards when you iron it on. The easiest way to reverse the pattern is to flip the pattern sheet over, use a light box to retrace the pattern onto the black side of the paper. Place the fusible web paper side up onto the reversed pattern and trace with pencil. Step two: Once the pattern/shape has been drawn onto the paper side of the fusible web, cut approx ¼” away from the lines of the pattern. Step three: Fuse the webbing according to the manufactures instructions- to the wrong side of the appliqué fabric. Step four: Cut out the fused appliqué on the original traced lines. Step five: Place the appliqué onto your project in the correct location, remove the backing paper and fuse in on. Always allow each patch or appliqué to cool before adding a new layer. Step six: hand embroider (embroidery floss-blanket stitch) or machine embroider (zigzag stitch) the edges of the appliqué. |
